Boys' Lacrosse: Friday and Saturday's Top Games (5/27 and 5/28)

Friday 5/27

No regular season games, but three championship games: SWC, SCC and FCIAC:

(1) Newtown vs (3) New Fairfield @ 5pm @ Pomperaug HS
-Newtown beat New Fairfield 12-8 way back on 4/29 so this is really anyone's game. Not the Barlow-Newtown match-up most people were looking for but a win for Newtown would still be impressive.

(1) #4 Fairfield Prep vs (2) Cheshire @ 3pm @ Branford HS
-Cheshire is not only the defending Class L champion but they also won the SCC tournament last year.  Here they are again against the same opponent.  Hand really showed how vulnerable Prep is but Cheshire is a different team than Hand and Prep will certainly be ready for some revenge, regardless of their 12-2 and 11-6 wins over Cheshire in the regular season!

(1) #1 Darien vs (3) #3 Ridgefield @ 7pm @ Brien McMahon HS (Norwalk)
-Ridgefield may have knocked off the defending FCIAC champions, Greenwich (who beat Darien in the title game last year), but similar to the story about Prep above, I think Darien will get back to winning their conference tournament this year, as they are certainly the best team in the state.  If Wednesday taught us anything though, it's that no one, even the teams we think are untouchable, is safe; Wilton was with Darien for most of the semifinal so a Ridgefield upset is more likely than one may think.  I'd definitely recommend going to see what happens!

Saturday 5/28

Play-in games for the state tournament, only necessary for Class L this year.  Ironically enough, Cheshire will be playing on back-to-back days; that what happens when you play in a good conference and are the defending champions (you get everyone's best).

(17) Cheshire @ (16) Danbury
-I feel bad for Danbury because even after the SCC tournament this week, I still think Cheshire rolls to a big win here.  It may be close because it is the tournament and Prep the day before will be a very tough game but I doubt the Rams will look past Danbury, knocking the Hatters out early.

(18) Shelton @ (15) South Windsor
-This a tough one to pick as almost every team below these two could probably beat them but Shelton has much weaker wins and South Windsor will be playing with a chip on their shoulder after getting upset in the CCC East Championship game by Windsor so I think the Bobcats prevail here.

(19) New Milford @ (14) Conard
-New Milford showed up big in the SWC tournament pushing New Fairfield to overtime and Conard is upset prone as Hall proved but I'm still picking Conard to win here (based on Conard had a good season and NM a bad one).

(20) Westhill @ (13) Southington
-Winner gets to play Fairfield Prep in the first round; I think Southington wins but it should be close since these "lower" FCIAC teams are really dark horses with bad records due to how strong their conference is.

(21) Stamford @ (12) Greenwich
-I do feel confident saying that Stamford doesn't stand much of a chance in this one.  Greenwich beat them 17-5 in the regular season and the Cardinals are early favorites to win the Class L tournament; what I think hurts them is their bracket: this, Glastonbury, Fairfield Prep, Ridgefield/Newtown, then Staples or Xavier/Brien McMahon.

Boys' Volleyball: Top Games for Fri 5/27

Friday 5/27

No regular season games, only the FCIAC Championship:
(1) Darien vs (2) Staples @ 7pm @ Fairfield Ludlowe HS

Boys' Lacrosse: Class S Tournament Unofficial Bracket

The regular season has ended so before the official bracktes come out tomorrow, Friday the 27th at noon, here is what the Class S tournament unofficially looks like:

www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=401118

NOTE: The other brackets come out tomorrow at noon too!

Boys' Lacrosse: Class M Tournament Unofficial Bracket

Much like Class L, the final four games of the regular season on Thursday have little to no impact on the seeding for the Class M tournament so here is how the bracket will look when it is officially released this weekend:

http://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=401117

Boys' Lacrosse: Class L Tournament Unofficial Bracket

The final four games of the regular season on Thursday have little to no impact on the Class L tournament seeding so here is how the bracket will look when it is released this weekend:

http://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=401115

NOTES:
-Prep vs (most likely) Southington would be the exact same match-up in the first round, with the exact same seeds for both teams, as last year
-Ridgefield should have an easy time making at least the quarterfinals by drawing Hall (lots of wins against bad opponents) and the semifinals as well since Newtown is good but on the level of a top tier FCIAC team (you never know though)
-Glastonbury vs Greenwich should be a very good game
-Xavier will most likely get Conard in the first round, a team they already faced this season and beat; that doesn't mean its going to happen again, it just means the two teams know each other
-Brien McMahon has probably the easier road to the semifinals with NFA then Xavier or Conard but if they face Xavier that will be an interesting match-up since both are good teams that just aren't the best in their conferences
-Simsbury got a lucky draw with Hamden, they should have no problems there
-Look for Staples to be back in the semifinals yet again as they beat Glastonbury who beat Simsbury, their potential quarterfinal match-up

Boys' Volleyball: Class M Tournament Unofficial Bracket

Thursday is the last day of the regular season and there may only be 5 games, 4 with any importance, but they will decide seeds 4-9; that's a lot!  Here is the unofficial bracket as of midnight:

www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=401112

Boys' Volleyball: Class L Tournament Unofficial Bracket

Thursday 5/26 marks the final day of the regular season so that means the state tournament brackets will come out over the weekend before the first round enxt Tuesday, 6/1.  Only South Windsor is in action today but if they win or lose their seed does not chance so here is what the Class L bracket will look like:

Thursday 5/26

(2) Simsbury 12 @ (1) #9 Glastonbury 10
-Congratulations to the Simsbury Trojans for a well-deserved CCC West Championship.  I personally caught the second half of this one (from 6-6 in the 3rd) and Simsbury just looked better on all fronts in the second half.  They were playing lights out defense, very physical that cost them penalties sometimes but they did score while a man down and they made Glastonbury really work for their goals.  On offense, Simsbury was running the plays they wanted to, Glastonbury's defense would come up with a strip every couple possessions, but Simsbury was scoring on the other ones so they didn't mind.  As the fourth period went on, even with the score tied or only being down one Glastonbruy just played scared, didn't run their plays well and got some unnecessary unsportsmanlike penalties to cap off a disappointing game.  My MVP for the game, although #12 Timothy Bulmer was in almost every play on offense, would have to be Simsbury's goalie, pardon me for not knowing his name, would made not only a lot of saves, but a lot of really tough saves and did an exceptional job clearing the ball for the Trojans.

(2) Windsor 6 @ (1) South Windsor 5 OT
-This one took overtime but once again, the two seed and regular season loser gets revenge and the championship trophy.

Boys' Volleyball: Conference Tournaments Championship Update

SWC

Championship - Thursday 5/26 @ Oxford HS
(1) Masuk vs (2) Oxford @ 7pm

SCC

Championship - Thursday 5/26 @ Shelton HS
(1) Cheshire vs (3) Daniel Hand @ 7pm

FCIAC

Championship - Friday 5/27 @ Fairfield Ludlowe HS
(1) Darien vs (2) Staples @ 7pm

Boys' Lacrosse: Wednesday and Thursday's Top Games (5/25 and 5/26)

Wednesday 5/25

Conard @ Hall @ 2pm
The West Hartford rivalry should be good again this year as Conard is one of the better teams in the state this year and Hall may have lost to all the good teams they faced so far but they beat the rest of the CCC so should not be overlooked.

SWC and SCC Semifinals:

(2) #10 Joel Barlow vs (3) New Fairfield @ 5pm @ Weston HS
-New Fairfield should make this closer than their regular season match-up but I still Barlow coming out on top.

(1) Newtown vs (4) Weston @ 7pm @ Weston HS
-Weston could provide quite the test for Newtown but the Nighthawks seem destined to end up in the championship for another game against Barlow to possibly settle who is better.

(2) Cheshire vs (3) Guilford @ 4pm @ Branford HS
-This will be a very good game and I'm going to make it my GAME OF THE DAY because Guilford beat Cheshire 16-3 last Friday, the 20th, but Cheshire did beat them 6-2 way back on 4/8 and is the defending Class L Chmapions.  I'm going to go with Guilford in this one but not by 13 goals, I'll say 5 or less.

(1) #4 Fairfield Prep vs (4) Daniel Hand @ 6pm @ Branford HS
-Prep is Prep and many think they are untouchable, rightly so since they went undefeated in conference play.  However, Hand has a very good team and they did come closest to beating the Jesuits, losing twice but only by four goals each time, 6-10 on 4/8 (ironic, I know) and 10-14 on 5/16, so there is hope.

Thursday 5/26

CCC Championships:

West: (2) Simsbury @ (1) #9 Glastonbury @ 530pm
-Glastonbury may have just beat Simsbury 8-5 almost a week ago on Friday the 20th but Simsbury is a very good team and will be more than ready for this one.  Glastonbury knows how to get up for a big game and win though so I think they will still win this game, maybe in overtime.

East: (2) Windsor @ (1) South Windsor @ 515pm
-In the sub-par division of the CCC, SW went undefeated (6-0) and Windsor 5-1 but neither of these teams are in the top four of the conference as a whole (3-Coanrd 4-Southington) so all I'm going to say about this game is the Bobcats won 10-8 in the regular season and they should find similar success in the championship game.

Boys' Volleyball: Top Games for Wed 5/25 and Thurs 5/26

Wednesday 5/25

Newington @ Wethersfield @ 4pm
-Newington is the favorite and has already beaten Wethersfield once this year but these are still two good teams.

Southington @ South Windsor @ 5
-Same thing as above except for Southington this time.

Norwich Free Academy @ Fermi @ 530
-Two play-off teams in the Class L and Class M tournaments respectively.  Fermi is the favorite but a win would help either team for seeding.

FCIAC and SCC Semfinals:

(2) Staples v (3) Ridgefield @ 5pm @ Fairfield Ludlowe HS

(1) Darien v (4) Bridgeport Central @ 7pm @ Fairfield Ludlowe HS

(3) Daniel Hand @ (2) Xavier @ 530pm
Thursday 5/26 - LAST DAY OF REGULAR SEASON

Fermi @ South Windsor @ 430pm
-Both teams are in the playoffs in the Class M and Class L tournaments respectively.

Farmington @ Enfield @ 6
-Two Class M teams prepare for the state tournament next week in what is sure to be a good game.

Bloomfield @ Wolcott Tech @ 630
-Bloomfield is on fire lately but Wolcott Tech is still a good team from Class M (Bloomfield is in Class L) so this should be a great end to the 2011 regular season.

SCC and SWC Championship games:

(1) Cheshire vs (3) Daniel Hand @7pm @ Shelton HS

(1) Masuk vs (2) Oxford @ 7pm @ Oxford HS

Boys' Volleyball: Monday and Tuesday Results (5/23 and 5/24)

Monday 5/23

Newington 2 @ Cheshire 3 (25-21, 23-25, 29-27, 22-25, 15-13)
-For Cheshire, Ryan Cuppurnell had 23 kills, Nate Howard had 19 kills, Joe Bahgathad 18 kills and 13 digs and K.C. Philcox had eight kills and eight digs. For Newington, Derek Dempsey had 17 kills and 10 digs.

Glastonbury 0 @ Southington 3

Tuesday 5/24

Xavier 3 @ Glastonbury 1 (26-28, 25-22, 25-15, 25-23)
-For Xavier, Sean Nelson had 26 kills.  For Glastonbury, Matt Cyr had 18 kills.

Lewis Mills 2 @ Wolcott Tech 3 (18-25, 25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 15-13)
-For Wolcott Tech, Dennis Waibel had 49 assists.  For Lewis Mills, Eric Woodcox had 14 kills.

Boys' Volleyball: Top Games for Mon 5/23 and Tues 5/24

Monday 5/23

Newington @ Cheshire @ 6pm
-Last chance for someone to end Cheshire's perfect season and Newington is a more than able team to accomplish that task.  The match went 3-2 last time at Newington with Cheshire coming out on top; look for a similar result in this one.

Glastonbury @ Southington @ 6

Tuesday 5/24

Xavier @ Glastonbury @ 5pm
-Winner gets the 8 seed in the Class L tournament, which is the last team that gets to host a home game in the first round so it is quite important.

Lewis Mills @ Wolcott Tech @ 530
-Tech is the favorite to win this against the defending Class M champions (who didn't even qualify for the tournament this year) but this match-up is kind of a rivalry and Mills is not a bad team so if Tech isn't ready they could find themselves on the losing end in this one.

SWC and SCC Semifinals:

(2) Oxford 3 vs (3) Joel Barlow 2 (16-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-10)
-For Oxford, Tim Hoxha had 16 kills and 13 digs, J.P. Vankamerik had 16 kills, seven blocks and four digs and Chris Villano had 20 assists and seven digs.

(1) Masuk 3 vs (4) Kolbe Cathedral 0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-12)
-For Masuk, Collin Neaton had 31 assists and three blocks, Connor Ryan had 14 kills and Chris Stevison had 15 service points.

(1) Cheshire 3 vs (4) Amity 0 (25-7, 25-10, 30-28)
-For Cheshire, Nate Howard had 11 kills, Evan Colechia had 10 kills, KC Philcox had nine kills and six blocks and Ray Brumleve had 40 assists.

The FCIAC tournament moves into the semfinals, two high caliber games:

(2) #2 Greenwich vs (3) #3 Ridgefield @ 5pm @ Brien McMahon HS (Norwalk)
-I actually think Ridgefield is the hotter team right now and will win this tiem around (Greenwich only beat them by one last time 8-9)

(1) #1 Darien vs (5) #5 Wilton @ 7pm (45 mins after other game ends) @ Brien McMahon HS (Norwalk)
-Sorry but I don't see Wilton pulling the upset.  It should be close since it is the playoffs and Wilton is a very good team but Darien, like many other times this season, will come out on top.
