Boys' Lacrosse: Friday and Saturday Results (5/20 and 5/21)

Friday 5/20
Simsbury 5 @ #9 Glastonbury 15
-see below:
Goals: S--Matt Bulmer (3), Trevor Gallagher, Eric Hesketh; G--Cory Santor (3), Jack Meotti (3), Zach Malsky, Shane O'Keefe.

Guilford 16 @ Cheshire 3
-Are you kidding me? Such a good win for Guilford, that we knew they were capable of, but an even worse loss for Cheshire that I don't think anyone saw coming! The SCC tournament is going to be nuts (like it is every year)!

Saturday 5/21

Southington 7  #9 Glastonbury 13
-see below:
Goals: G--Zach Malsky (3), Chad Britnell (3), Cory Santor (2), John Meotti (2), Scott Pelligrinelli, Robert Solecki, Stefan Gottschalk; S--Matt Prezioso (4), Zach Wholley (2), Jordan Chapman.
Stonington 4 @ Guilford 2
-Shocking that after a 16-3 win over defending Class L champion Cheshrie just the day before, Guilford drops this one 2-4 to Stonington.  Props to Stonington on improving to 15-0 with only Hall (10-4) remaining on Monday.

Boys' Lacrosse: Friday and Saturday's Top Games (5/20 and 5/21)

Friday 5/20

Simsbury @ #9 Glastonbury @ 5pm
-The most anticipated game in the CCC for quite some time, the two top teams will go head-to-head for not only the top seed in the upcoming tournament but also the respect of the state and bragging rights.  Glastonbury needs to win to stay in the Top Ten but Simsbury is right there nipping at their heels.

Guilford @ Cheshrie @ 7
-Guilford is seeking revenge for a 2-6 loss in the second game of the season.  If all the Indians are there and healthy, they have gotten a lot better from the beginning of the season and will be very hungry to take this coveted SCC game from the defending champs.  Cheshire is rebounding from their loss to New Canaan on Wednesday, as they head into the SCC tournament next week as the #2 seed.

Saturday 5/21

Southington @ #9 Glastonbury @ 11am
-A make-up of Tuesday's game, Glastonbury simply needs to go out there and win to prove they are at the top of the CCC but Southington is more than capable of pulling the upset.  Great game to start of the day!

Stonington @ Guilford @ 4
-Stonington is 14-0 but their only real "tests" so far have been 10-4 Ledyard twice and 9-5 Norwich Free Academy.  Their closest game has been by five goals to Ledyard once and 8-6 Waterford once.  Guilford, on the other hand, may be 7-7 but they play in the highly competitive SCC and have beaten some otop teams, like Hand and then Joel Barlow in the following game.  This is their last game before the SCC tournament on Monday.

ALL THE FCIAC TOURNAMENT GAMES:

(8) Fairfield Ludlowe @ (1) #1 Darien @ 1
-The 8 v 1 match-up is meant to be an easy game for the 1 seed and this one doesn't even look like it will be close. Darien won 17-4 in the regular season.

(7) #8 Staples @ (2) #2 Greenwich
-Way back on 4/23 (approx a month ago) Greenwich did beat Staples 8-5 but 3 goals is not a safe margin of victory in the FCIAC.  The stakes are higher this time and both teams will be very motivated to play some of their best lacrosse of the season.  Greenwich is the favorite but this is the playoffs now so anything can happen!

(6) #7 Brien McMahon @ (3) #6 Ridgefield @ 2
-These two haven't forgot each other since just over a week ago on 5/12 is when Ridgefield got the better of McMahon 12-9.  This one should be another close game and a win for either team would be huge as both compete in Class L (and have the same record ironically, but tournament games do not count on a team's record for states).

(5) #5 Wilton @ (4) #4 New Canaan @ 5
-Not only is the 5 v 4 game so it's supposed to be the closest and best match-up but the regular season meeting between these two saw a dramatic come-from-behind victory for New Canaan 10-8; expect another great game!

Boys' Volleyball: Top Games for Fri 5/20

Friday 5/20

Wolcott Tech @ Wethersfield @ 4pm
-Two top teams in Class M, Wethersfield needs to get some big wins while Wolcott Tech is looking to jsut add to their collection of quality wins.

some other decent games Daniel Hand @ Farmington, Xavier @ Lewis Mills, Norwich Free Academey @ Newington or Bloomfield @ Simsbury but I can't see an upset happening in any of them

Thursday, May 19, 2011

Boys' Volleyball: Wednesday and Thursday Results (5/18 adn 5/19)

Wednesday 5/19

Greenwich 3 @ Bridgeport Central 2 (17-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-22, 15-11)
-For Bridgeport Central, Jakob Valko had 50 assists, Abdoulie Williams had 26 kills and 14 blocks, Rodolfo Pestana had 23 service points, five aces, 31 kills, 14 digs and 10 blocks.

South Windsor 1 @ Bloomfield 3 (25-15, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24)
-For Bloomfield, Caleb Arelus had 19 kills and 26 assists. For South Windsor, Jason George had 15 kills.

Staples 2 @ Ridgefield 3 (22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 15-8)
-For Ridgefield, Mike Peckham had 14 kills, eight service points and seven digs, Wyatt Cooper added 17 kills and seven blocks, Ian Word had 14 kills, five service points and 12 digs and Chris Bruno had 44 assists and eight service points.

Xavier 0 @ Cheshire 3 (25-16, 25-10, 25-15)
-For Cheshire, Nate Howard had 14 kills and four aces, Joe Baghat had 12 kills, K.C. Philcox had nine kills, three blocks and three digs and Ryan Cuppernull had nine kills and six digs.

Thursday 5/19

Goalies: N--Ted Benoit (4 saves), Evan Isaacs (2); M--Kyle Matthews (12).
Shots: N--38; M--20.

Joel Barlow 17 @ New Fairfield 7
-Great win for the Falcons of Joel Barlow.

#3 Fairfield Prep 4 @ St. Anthony's (NY) 13
-St. Anthony's beat Wilton 10-6 and lost to Darien 8-9 in OT so this 9 goal loss for Prep doesn't bode well for them to make the case for being better than the FCIAC's best.  Luckily, both Darien and Wilton play in Class M while Prep is in Class L.

#6 Ridgefield 10 @ #1 Darien 17
-Darien is officially the #1 team in the FCIAC (and state) and the #1 seed in the upcoming tournament on Saturday.
Scoring: D --- Case Matheis (4g, 2a), Richard Gregory (4g, 1a), Ben Preston (4g), Graham Maybell (3g), Bobby Weaver (2g, 1a), Eric Parnon (2a), Baylis Treen (1a); R --- Bucknavage (3g, 1a), Scala (3g, 1a), Wilkinson (3g, 1a), Riley (1g).

Guilford @ Cheshire - PPD to 5/20

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Boys' Volleyball: Top Games for Wed 5/18 and Thurs 5/19

Wednesday 5/18

Greenwich @ Bridgeport Central @ 4pm
-Greenwich is 8-5 and playing their last game of the regular season so they have already qualified for the Class L tournament but a win in their 14 game schedule is worth almost .100 points in their win percentage...which determines the seeding.  Bridgeport Central is 12-5 playing their final game as well and a win just means they will host an even easier first round game, so this is more about respect for them and CCC teams not named Newington, Southington or Glastonbury.

South Windsor @ Bloomfield @ 5
-Bloomfield is 11-3 and one of the top seeds in Class M right now while South Windsor sit in an even better position at 11-2 and poised to get one of the top seeds in Class L and possibly even a first-round bye!  Great CCC match right here!

Staples @ Ridgefield @ 530
-You knew the FCIAC was going to have a least one good conference game on the day and here it is!  Staples won this match-up 3-1 a week ago on 5/11 but it is always hard to beat the same team twice, especially when both are volleyball powerhouses with extremely talented teams this year!

Xavier @ Cheshire @ 6
-Speaking of beating the same team twice, this is one of the bitterest recent rivalries in the SCC.  2 years ago Cheshire upset Xavier in the SCC championship game and spoiled their perfect season last year in the regular season, before Xavier won their first ever SCC championship that year, over none other than the Cheshire Rams.  Xavier has the chance to spoil Cheshire's perfect season this year as the Rams sit atop Class L at 15-0.  Cheshire did win the first meeting two weeks ago on 5/2 3-0 but the games were 25-22, 25-23 adn 25-23 and anything can happen when two talented SCC teams go head-to-head, especially in a rivalry like this!

Thursday 5/19

Fermi @ Enfield @ 530pm
-Fermi got the better of the Enfield showdown 3-1 just over a week ago on 5/10 but Enfield is at home this time, where they coming off a huge 3-1 win over Glastonbury, and both teams still represent two of the best in Class M!

Boys' Lacrosse: Wednesday and Thursday's Top Games (5/18 and 5/19)

Wednesday 5/18

Masuk @ #10 Newtown @ 330pm
-Newtown needs this decent win to rebound from their horrible 12-13 loss to Norwalk on Monday.

Joel Barlow @ New Fairfield @ 4
-Barlow is my #11 team and with Newtown's loss Monday, they are poised to re-enter the Top Ten next week.  New Fairfield is 13-2, with their only losses being Rye (NY) and Newtown.  If Barlow gets the big win here their stock will be on the rise!

#3 Fairfield Prep @ St. Anthony's (NY) @ 430
-The Jesuits are coming off their 14-10 win over Hand on Monday as they go to New York to take on a fellow Catholic school, St. Anthony's.  St. Anthony's is the number two in New York's Catholic school league.

#6 Ridgefield @ #1 Darien @ 430
-One of the most anticipated games of the season, the two top teams in the FCIAC (record-wise) square off in afternoon game at Darien's Stadium Field.  Can Ridgefield be the one and only team to beat Darien this season in the final game of the regular season for both?

#7 Brien McMahon @ #9 Glastonbury @ 5
-Its make or break time for both of these teams as a win for Glastonbury would jump them into the top eight and drop McMahon out of it, from their highest point at #4.  A win for McMahon does the exact opposite and gives them the ability to move up next week while G-bury may drop to the ten spot again.

#4 New Canaan @ Cheshire @ 7
-An interesting cross-conference game for NC to close out their season on as they get a shot at the defending Class L champions , Cheshire.  On the other hand, Cheshire is coming off a big 9-6 come-from-behind win over 10-3 Xavier and can gain a lot of respect with another huge upset win here!

Thursday 5/19

Conard @ Hall @ 515pm
-The West Hartford rivalry should be good again this year as Conard is one of the better teams in the state this year and Hall may have lost to all the good teams they faced so far but they beat the rest of the CCC so they will be a threat come tournament time.

#10 Newtown @ Weston @ 530
-A great way to close out the season in the SWC as Weston is 10-3 and Newton needs the quality win moving into states and, first and more importantly, the SWC tournament.

Guilford @ Cheshire @ 730
-Game of the day for sure, Guiulford is seeking revenge for a 2-6 loss in the second game of the season.  If all the Indians are there and healthy, they have gotten a lot better from the beginning of the season and will be very hungry to take this coveted SCC game from the defending champs.  Cheshire will most likely be rebounding from their game against New Canaan as they head into the SCC tournament next week as the #2 seed.

Boys' Volleyball: Monday and Tuesday Results (5/16 and 5/17)

Monday 5/16

Xavier 3 @ Amity 2 (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-27, 15-12)
-For Xavier, Sean Nelson had 27 kills, R.J. Weir had 12 digs and Kurt Johnson had 42 assists, 8 digs.   For Amity, Chase Brinton had 18 kills and 10 digs and Elliott Demelier had 38 assists.

Greenwich 0 @ Ridgefield 3

Newington 0 @ Southington 3

Farmington 3 @ Wethersfield 1 (20-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-22)
-For Farmington, Harrison Kime had 16 kills and 15 digs.  For Wethersfield, Adam Andrews had 40 assists.

Tuesday 5/17

Glastonbury 1 @ Enfield 3

Boys' Lacrosse: Monday and Tuesday Results (5/16 and 5/17)

Monday 5/16

#3 Fairfield Prep 14 @ Daniel Hand 10
-see below:
Fairfield Prep 3 3 5 3 — 14
Hand 2 5 2 1 — 10
Goals: FP — Conor Kelly 3, Harry Cotter 3, Matt Brophy 2, Kevin Brown 2, David White 2, Tyler Cox 2; H — Alec Pacelli 4, Paul Alberti 2, Casey Dowd, Riley Kirsch, Natusch, Mayhew.
Assists: FP — Kelly 2; H — Pacelli, Alberti, Natusch, Dowd.
Saves: FP — Mike Soalye 13; H — Connor Carroll 9.
Shots: FP — 23; H — 23.

Xavier 6 @ Cheshire 9
-see below:
Xavier 3 2 1 0 — 6
Cheshire 1 1 3 4 — 9
Goals: X — Matt Kycia 2, Trevor Buchas 2, Geoff Bruno, Tyler Crowl; C — Tyler Violano 2, Jon Bronke 2, Spencer Hackett 2, John Cunningham, Matt Dupont, Matt Samuelson.
Assists: X — Kycia 2; C — Tommy Dupont 2, Cunningham, M. Dupont, Samuelson.
Saves: X — Nick Ford, 15; C — Will Devine, 12; Marco Iovanna, 1.
Shots: X — 21; C — 45.

#2 Greenwich 13 @ Lakeland/Panas (NY) 12 OT
-It took overtime but Greenwich finally got an out-of-state win and the additional win will help their seeding (and confidence-Lakeland/Panas is a very good team) in the state tournament!

Tuesday 5/17

#8 Staples 10 @ St. Joseph 9
-St. Joseph almost did it, they almost got that marque win but the score alone should be enough to prove what they have been showing all year: they are very good team that just plays in the FCIAC.

Southington @ #9 Glastonbury - PPD to 5/21

Avon 6 @ Somers 12
-Somers improves to 13-0.

Hall @ Stonington - PPD to 5/23

Norwich Free Academy @ East Lyme - PPD to 5/21

Yorktown (NY) 5 @ #5 Wilton 7
-This is a very impressive win for the Wilton Warriors that should give them momentum going into their big first-round match up of the FCIAC tournament on Saturday against Ridgefield or Greenwich!

Sunday, May 15, 2011

Boys' Volleyball: Top Games for Mon 5/16 and Tues 5/17

Monday 5/16

Xaveir @ Amity @ 530pm
-I feature this match between a 7-6 and an 8-6 team respectively because of its implications on the SCC tournament next week.  If Xaveir wins, they virtually lock up the 2 seed.  If Amity wins, because of their loss to Hand last week, they would force a three-way that really only Xavier can break if they beat Cheshire on Wednesday or Shelton can break by upsetting Amity, Hand or Xavier (but they are winless in conference and -12 overall so that is unlikely)!

Greenwich @ Ridgefield @ 530
-A big FCIAC showdown, much like the SCC one above it, pits two good teams in the state battling it out for conference tournament seeding.  The difference here is that Greenwich has the four seed and does not play enough conference games to move up whereas Ridgefield is the two seed and has too many losses to move up this late in the season, unless Staples or Darien lose the rest of their games, but that is highly unlikely!

Newington @ Southington @ 630
-Newington did take this match-up 3-1 last time but Southington is the only team besides Cheshire, who beat Newington 3-2, Bulkely and Lewis Mills to win a set against the Indians so this should pan out to be an extremely good match!

Farmington @ Wethersfield @ 630
-Two top teams in Class M clash as the Wethersfield Eagles are trying to rebound from their loss to Bloomfield last week and Farmington is coming off a 3-2 win over Wolcott Tech!

Tuesday 5/17

Glastonbury @ Enfield @ 5pm
-The Tomahakws are 7-4 so a win at Enfield would earn them a spot in the Class L state tournament and a quality win whereas Enfield has already made the Class M state tournament at 8-5 but is looking to rebound from a rough 1-3 loss to Norwich Free Academy.  This should be a pretty good match that could go either way.

Boys' Lacrosse: Monday and Tuesday's Top Games (5/16 and 5/17)

Monday 5/16

#3 Fairfield Prep @ Daniel Hand @ 7pm
-Although the Jesuits beat the Tigers 10-6 in the second game of the season, that's the closest any SCC team has come to beating Prep so one can expect another great game!

Xavier @ Cheshire @ 7
-Think of Prep v Hand as the 1 v 4 game in the SCC tournament and this one as 2 v 3.  The only thing is that this game will most likely decide who is the 2 seed and who is the 3 seed in the SCC tournament next week as both of these teams have only two in-conference losses (X: Prep and Hand, C: Prep 2x), Prep has none, and Guilford and Hand each have 4.  The only other possibility, major upsets aside, is Cheshire has a game left with Guilford this Wednesday.  Basically, the control their own destiny: a win here and they have the #2 seed; they did lose to Simsbury and Conard this past Saturday, both teams Xavier beat, so it won't be that easy.

#2 Greenwich @ Lakelnad/Panas (NY) @ 7
-Greenwich has their fifth and final shot at picking up an out-of-state win but it will be very hard as Lakeland/Panas beat Rye (NY) 8-7 and Rye just beat Greenwich 10-8 in a very close game this past Saturday!

Tuesday 5/17

#8 Staples @ St. Joseph @ 4pm
- With a win here, Staples can slide up to the six seed in the FCIAC tournament and face Greenwich instead of Ridgefield, moving Wilton from the six seed to the seven seed.

Southington @ #9 Glastonbury @ 430
-If Glasotnbury picks up the win here like they should, their game against Simsbury later this week will be the deciding game for the number one seed in the CCC tournament.  Don't sleep on Southington though as they are a talented team just waiting to pull an upset.

Avon @ Somers @ 430
-I want to show Somers some love as they are 12-0 but their best win all season was 11-7 over Avon earlier this season.  Avon is 9-4 but as a barometer of how bad they really are, they lost 1-12 to Coanrd.

Hall @ Stonington @ 6
-At 14-0, Stonington represents the best team from the ECC; they beat Norwich Free Academy and Ledyard twice.  They close out the season with Hall, who they have a very good chance of beating, and then Guilford, who, most likely, will beat them.

Norwich Free Academy @ East Lyme @ 7
-A good ECC match-up worth noting this late in the season.  East Lyme is 10-3 after beating Guilford 6-5 in OT to open the season and, most recently, only losing 9-12 to Hand.

Yorktown (NY) @ #5 Wilton @ 730
-Wilton will end their season by hosting the #3 team in New York's Section I and the #1 team in New York Section I B, York town.  Yorktown lost to Darien and Ridgefield but beat Somers, who beat New Canaan (who beat Wilton).  It should be a very good game!
