Boys' Lacrosse: Monday and Tuesday's Top Games (4/11 and 4/12)

Monday 4/11

Cheshire @ Fairfield Prep @ 4pm
-GAME OF THE WEEK for sure!!! You cannot ask for a better high school lacrosse game, especially this early in the season!  To start, these are the two best teams in the SCC right now (both beat Hand) and that alone will make this a fierce rivalry game.  However, these two have a history in more than just conference play; Cheshire, backed by Todd Heritage, beat Prep 9-8 in the regular season last year and then 9-8 again in the Class L Championship game!  Prep had won Class L every year since 2006 when the CIAC switched from the division format to the class structure, but not 2010!  Both had similar off seasons in that they lost All-American attackmen (C-Heritgae and FP-Brendan Rotanz) and another All-American player (Darric White on defense for FP and Nate Guadio in goal for Cheshire).  Both lost a slew of All-State players as well but also return one (C-Evan Guadio and FP-Tyler Cox).  The differences are that the Rams still have All-American Torrey Martone on defense but also have to worry about having a first-year goalie.  This game will not disappoint so if you want to add some excitement to your Monday be there!

South Windsor @ Simsbury @ 530
-SW is 1-1 but they lost to a very good Southington so I want to see how good they are going to be this year and, more importantly, I want to see how a team as talented as Simsbury bounces back from their disappointing loss to Xavier on Saturday.

Guilford @ Hand @ 7
-Some nice night lax on turf; it will be a great atmosphere for Hand to showcase how good they are this year against a decent Guilford squad that is simply a victim of the SCC schedule they play.  Don't rule out the possibility of a Guilford upset tho since Hand is coming off 7-8 and 6-10 losses to Cheshire and Prep respectively; I think that only helps Hand though and they will blow Guilford out of the water!

Tuesday 4/12

East Catholic @ Northwest Catholic @ 4pm
-I always like to see these two schools play each other since they draw students from the same geographic area and I know for a fact that many of the athletes are good friends having played together growing up.  Could make for an interesting game.

Brien McMahon @ St. Joseph @ 4
-Two of the top teams in the state square off in this one.  St. Joseph may be the better team pre-season but McMahon is on fire right now at 2-0 with 18-3 and 18-5 wins over Branford and Stamford respectively.  St. Joseph sits at 1-1 with a  14-7 win over Norwalk and a 4-18 loss to Darien.  McMahon is Class L while the Cadets play in Class S but like I said before, St. Joseph has more talent and is still the favorite in this high-profile match-up.

Masuk @ New Fairfield @ 4
-Although I expect a New Fairfield win, I had to feature this game since both teams are 2-0 in Class M and, statistically, Masuk's two wins (17-1 over Notre Dame-Fairfield and 16-10 over Housatonic Valley) are just slightly better than New Fairfield's (15-4 over Bethel and 11-9 over Conard) so a game between the two interests me.

Wilton @ Joel Barlow @ 430
-Again, this game features two of the state's best teams.  To start, Wilton is the favorite, especially after their 12-5 dismantling of Glastonbury on Saturday.  Barlow has a 7-4 win over Simsbury to their credit though.  A win here would be huge for the Falcons in their quest to challenge Weston and St. Joseph in Class S but the Wilton Warriors will be trying to send a message to Darien, the team everyone is trying to beat in Class M (and well, in every class/conference/state...they're #5 in the nation).

Staples @ Ridgefield @ 6
-The FCIAC has two pre-season Top Ten match-ups of their own going on Tuesday and both are can't miss games!  If you can imagine, this is the "lesser" of the two as you will see in a second.  Ridgefield is 2-0 with a 18-3 win over Trumbull in-state and a 9-8 win over Somers from NY (who beat New Canaan)...very impressive thus far!  Staples, also 2-0, has faced easier opponents and had a tougher time with them: 12-6 over Norwalk then 11-10 in OT over Fairfield-Ludlowe.  On paper, Ridgefield has this game hands down but Kip Orban (attack) and the other kids on Staples will be trying to prove that wrong!

Greenwich @ New Canaan @ 7
-To put things in perspective, the FCIAC game above this one is #7 @ #8 according to the NHR poll but this one is #3 @ #4 [C @ FP is #5 @ #2]!!!!! Don;t let their record fool you, New Canaan (0-1) lost to a very good Somers team from NY and Greenwich (1-1) lost only 6-13 to Darien (and beat Westhill 18-8).  One can expect both teams to be very hungry for not just a big-time FCIAC win but also a marquee in-state win to send a message out to the rest of the state!
